Maths and Jumping

Standard

Yesterday we got back to business (after getting our hair done) after having this nasty vomiting bug going around!

Lady P was ready to work!  She did some Maths at the board so she could stand instead of sit.  I began to notice her struggle with counting backwards while doing subtraction. So I decided to get her to jump backwards as many jumps as she needed to subtract. So 12-4 meant  she jumped back 4 while counting from 12.  I realised this took quite a bit of coordination; however, she enjoyed this activity and kept asking for more subtraction problems. Her brain moves at a mile-a-minute so this helped her to focus!  All the movement really aided her understanding!

I also have come to realise that when I teach her something new, it seems to take a few days to sink in and suddenly, she can do it! Patience and perseverance are the basis of teaching! I find that difficult when it’s your own child!

We also started our work on Little Red Riding Hood. We read one version then started writing a brief storyboard.  I have researched ADHD a lot and one thing that stands out is that they have wonderful ideas but their hands can’t write as fast as their minds move so they forget what they want to write.  So I get Lady P to tell me what she wants to write, then I remember it for her so she can focus on writing instead of remembering. This has taken the stress out of writing for now.  I am researching programmes for the iPad which will type what she dictates as she loves telling stories!
